North Fork Kings River Country

North Fork Kings River 1

ABOVE: The more attractive western-most Twin Buck Lake with good camping and fishing.

Twin Buck Lakes

From the south shore of Horsehead Lake, sight directly north to the right of Point 10695 to the low point there. Mark it well and turn Horsehead Lake on the right (east) side, following the trail. Leave the trail at the point it leaves the lake and continue your circuit of the lake until you get to the mark you memorized above. Follow the lowpoint of the notch northeast until you come to Roman Four Lake, turning the lake on the right (east). From there, travel northeast following an inlet stream-bed and the easiest routes, gradually working your way to the North while avoiding the steep terrain to your left. When you top the ridge, head Northwest until you get to the lowpoint of a draw bottomed by a seasonal stream, then follow the stream-bed North. At this point you have a choice: if you want to visit both of the Twin Buck Lakes, consider continuing North to the more beautiful tree lined and meadowed western lake (turning it on the right (East) side), then heading East to the barren and exposed eastern lake. If you only have the time or energy to visit one, keep heading north to the western lake. Whatever you do you should end up in the area just northeast of western Twin Buck Lake, working your way northeast to higher ground until you are overlooking Schoolmarm Lake.
